Depending on your destination, there is a very competitive car rental market throughout Chile. Many cater to skiing enthusiasts with 4X4 vehicles, or add-ons, such as snow chains and ski-holders.

Considerations:

Most of the “freeway” type highways around Santiago are toll-roads operated by different concession companies. Your vehicle will need a “tag” (a mobile tracking device) in order to circulate through the Santiago metro area. The fees are seasonal and change throughout the day. Car rental companies in Santiago may include this in the rental rate, which includes use of the “tag” on these roads, toll included. Outside of the city you will find other toll roads that require payment at a booth (not included in the “tag”). While this can add some extra expenses to your budget, we recommend the toll roads as they tend to be well maintained, and are generally more direct.

Gas is another expense that may shock your wallet. As of 1/2008, a liter of gas is around $1US. Most cars in Chile are small because of the cost of gasoline. If you are thinking of a bigger SUV, most car rental companies carry Diesel models, which can save you some money in the long run.

Basic car insurance (as required by law) is normally included in the price of the rental, and additional insurance can be purchased from the rental company.  In high altitude areas (all the ski areas) tire chains may be mandatory if conditions warrant.

Some rent-a-car companies will deliver the car to you, for a fee (mileage sensitive).  Also, some of the bigger hotels in Santiago have car rental desks.
